Tight clumping with superior odour control

Our litter is ultra tight clumping, meaning the granules absorb all the urine that lands on them and clump together to form a ball (or patty) of clumped litter. This litter clump can then be removed without leaving residual urine in the tray, leaving behind fresh and clean litter. Watching extra strong clumping litter form clumps is also incredibly satisfying to watch and scoop!

What is natural clumping cat litter?

This type of litter forms solid clumps (lumps) when it comes into contact with urine or faeces, making it easy to scoop out and dispose of. When your cat urinates in the litter tray, the liquid is absorbed by the highly absorbent litter and forms clumps that are easy to scoop out. This makes it easy to keep the litter tray clean and fresh, as you can remove the clumps soon after they form.

Clumping cat litter, also known as clump cat litter, can be made from a variety of materials. Our clumping cat litter, made from plant and wood fibres, is biodegradable and compostable. In our opinion, it is the perfect litter!

If you are not sure if you use clumping cat litter or not, traditional non-clumping litter usually comes in pellets or silica crystals e.g. Sanicat. You need to change non-clumping litter trays very frequently, usually 2-3 times a week.

Note, although technically natural, clay litter (usually clay granules) is also bad for the environment even if it is clumping. This type of clumping litter is made from bentonite clay. It is non-biodegradable and requires extensive mining to produce. An example is Catsan litter.

How clumping litter keeps your home clean

Why we think Tippaws is the best cat litter

Firstly, as you've probably realised by now, we think everyone should use a biodegradable clumping litter over non-clumping litter. The UK has been a traditional cat litter market for years, contribution to significant environmental damage.

Out litter is natural, plant-based and extremely high performing. It has great clumping power, is extra absorbent and easy to clean, leaving fresh litter behind when you remove clumps. Our litter is also low dust / almost dust free.

Looking for a multi-cat litter? Whether you have one cat, two cats or multiple cats, our litter lasts a really long time so you don't have to do a full tray change frequently.

We also offer free delivery and a subscription option - so you'll never run out of litter again!
We love it and we hope you will too!

How to avoid the scent of urine in your home - keep on top of your litter box or tray!

Urine from a healthy cat actually only contains a small amount of ammonia - about 0.05%. This is the same as the amount of ammonia in human urine.

However, cat urine contains about 2% of urea (again, the same as human urine) which is converted to ammonia by an enzyme produced by bacteria present in litter trays. This is what causes that “cat pee” smell we all know and hate!

So what can cat owners do to avoid the situation where you have urea being converted to ammonia in your cat’s litter tray and ultimately have a fresh and clean smelling home? The answer is: scoop, scoop, scoop!

Longer lasting than non-clumping cat litter formulas like clay or pellets

Scoop out clumps when you need to leaving behind fresh litter so you only have to do a full tray change once a month (depending on your cat - please use our calculator!). Our litter has a patented antibacterial formula, so it's very hygienic.

Types of cat litter

Litter FAQs

For our full list of FAQs, please visit our FAQ page. What is clumping cat litter?

Clumping cat litter is a type of litter that forms solid clumps when it comes into contact with urine, making it easier to remove waste from the litter box without having to change the entire litter tray every time.

What’s the best cat litter for odour control?

The choice of cat litter depends on various factors, but the best cat litter for odour control should clump well, absorb moisture efficiently, and contain natural odour-neutralising properties. We tend to find cats and humans both prefer natural clumping cat litters.

Tippaws Long-Lasting Clumping Cat Litter is a great option because it forms tight clumps and helps keep your cat litter tray fresh for longer.

What are the benefits of using clumping cat litter?

Using clumping cat litter makes it easier to change the litter tray less frequently and helps with odour control. Clumping cat litter can also allow for regular and more efficient removal of waste using a litter scoop.

Is clumping cat litter suitable for kittens?

Yes, clumping cat litter can be used for kittens; however, it is recommended to choose a dust-free and gentle formula to ensure the safety of the young cats. Tippaws Long-lasting Clumping litter is safe for kittens. If your kitten starts to eat the litter, please stop using it.

How often should I be clean litter trays?

It is advisable to change the litter entirely once a month for optimal hygiene, depending on how your cat uses it, how many cats you have and the frequency of urination as this will impact how much your litter smells. It is recommended to scoop the litter every day. Regular litter box maintenance is essential to keep your cat happy, so even if you change your litter once a month you must stay on top of scooping!

Does clumping cat litter work for controlling cat pee?

Yes, clumping cat litter effectively clumps cat pee, making it easier to remove and contain the waste within the clumps for better odour control.

What should I consider when choosing the best cat litter for my cat?

Factors to consider include the clumping ability, odour control, low dust nature, and preferences of your cat in terms of litter texture and scent. We have many articles on which cat litter you should choose, head to our articles page to read more.

What cat litter do cats like best?

Cats are very closely linked, in terms of their DNA and their behaviour, to their wild counterparts the African Wildcat. Cats haven’t really become fully “domesticated” in the same way dogs have and so we have to replicate how cats like to toilet in the wild.

Know that cats prefer all natural, unscented cat litter due to the smell being very artificial and off putting. They also particularly like cat litter which feels like sand/dirt under their paws.

Many cats prefer clumping litter because it is soft on their paws and makes it easier to bury waste. Our litter is made from 100% biodegradable materials, making it both safe for your cat and eco-friendly.

Can I use this litter with an automatic litter box or litter tray?

While some kinds of cat litter such as clumping clay litter is suitable for many automatic litter boxes or litter trays, we cannot guarantee that our litter will work. Our litter may work with your litter robot depending on how the mechanism works, but unfortunately we are not able to say for sure as there are so many robots that do / don't work with different litters. Please check with the manufacturer of the robot and ask them if it tends to work with natural litters that have fine granules.

You talk about natural and biodegradable litter, but what are the different types of litter available?

There are several types of litter, including clumping clay litter, biodegradable litter, silica litter, crystal litter, and scented litter. Tippaws’ biodegradable litter is an eco-friendly choice that clumps well for easy cleaning.

What type of litter is best litter for multiple cats?

If you have multiple litter trays in your home for a number of cats, clumping litter can help manage odours and reduce mess effectively. If you have multiple cats and the litter you use is non-clumping litter, you will go through a very large amount each month! Please note: one litter box is usually not enough for multi-cat households. We always recommend 1.5 trays / cat litter boxes per cat if you have more than one cat.

Does scented cat litter help with odour control and do cats like scented litter?

Scented litter will not get rid of bad odours, it will only mask them. It's important to remember that cats prefer unscented litter as strong fragrances can be off-putting. The litter used should always be comfortable for the cat. Tippaws litter is naturally odour-controlling without artificial scents.

What is the difference between clumping clay litter and silica litter?

Clay cat litter clumps when wet, making it easier to clean the litter tray, while silica litter absorbs moisture but does not clump. Many cat owners traditionally preferred clay-based litter for its convenience, however, both have negative impacts on the environment so people are moving to natural litters which are biodegradable and far better for the environment. There are many different types of litter on the market - if you want to try a natural litter, have a look at this article which may be helpful for you to find a litter right for you.

There are traces of litter in the house, how can I reduce litter tracking in my home?

To minimise litter tracking (i.e. litter in the house), use a litter mat near your kitty litter boxes. We recommend The Catch&Clean Mat from Pets Corner.

How do I get my cat to use the litter tray?

If your cat is hesitant to use the litter box, try placing it in a quiet area, using a litter they like best, and keeping it clean by scooping the litter every day. Cats are fastidious animals and may avoid a dirty litter tray. Here are some tips on creating the best litter tray set up for your cat if your cat is urinating outside of the litter tray.

Should I mix new litter with old litter when switching brands?

When introducing a new litter, it’s best to mix it gradually with the old litter over a few days. This helps your cat adjust and ensures they continue to use the litter box without issues.

How do I keep my cat happy with their litter setup?

To keep your cat happy, choose a litter they prefer, clean the litter box regularly, and ensure you have the right number of litter boxes—one litter box per cat plus an extra is often recommended. We also recommend that you put the litter in a quiet, accessible space.

Should I use a covered litter tray?

We always recommend an enclosed litter tray with a high lip and a cat-flap. This gives your cat privacy to go to the loo (we all know how private cats are!). It also helps keep in any pee or poo smells. Finally, it will help minimise any litter escaping the tray while your cat is burying their pee or poo.

There are many litter trays on the market, if you'd like some recommendations please send us your requirements (size of cat, number of cats, aesthetic look) and we will send you a list.

What if my cat doesn't like a covered litter box?

Ultimately, the most important thing is making sure your cat has a litter tray they are comfortable using. If they prefer an open tray there are other things you can do to reduce tracking and to keep bad smells in. We'll go through these later in the guide.

How does Tippaws compare to World’s Best Cat Litter?

World’s Best Cat Litter brand's Comfort Care is made from corn only while Tippaws Long-lasting Litter is made from wood and corn.

How does Tippaws compare to Pretty Litter?

Pretty Litter is a litter brand that focuses on health monitoring but is made from silica so it is not environmentally friendly. It is non-clumping. Tippaws Long-lasting Litter is made from 100 % biodegradable materials: wood and corn, so is a natural litter.
